Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has been making a habit lately of telling unpopular truths about the Republican party, particularly since he failed so miserably in his presidential bid. At a Judiciary Committee meeting Thursday, he did it again. While all of his Republican colleagues have been insisting that things Democrats once said hypothetically about handling Supreme Court nominations mean that a blockade is nothing new, Graham admitted that what his caucus is doing hasn't happened before.
"We are setting a precedent here today, Republicans are. That in the last year at least of a lame duck eight year term, I would say it's gonna be a four year term, that you're not going to fill a vacancy of the Supreme Court based on what we’re doing here today. That's going to be the new rule.
You can see the video of that statement below.
That's what Democrats have been saying all along—correctly—this has never happened before. Democrats have certainly opposed Supreme Court justice nominations, but have never denied them hearings, never denied them votes. Because there's nothing in the constitution that says the Senate can ignore its advice and consent duty to the president when he's a Democrat.
