I’m setting out to find the Political Revolution. I’d like you to join me. And I’m asking for your support.
It’s time for a change. Our system is rigged. People are crying “I’m mad has hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore,” and “enough is enough.” Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign is providing a focal point & a catalyst. The candidate characterizes his campaign as a movement, a “Political Revolution” – proclaiming “Not Me, Us!” and “We need to take back this country from the 1% and make it the America for the 99 % again.”
And I’ve certainly been #feelingthebern” – I’ve gone all in: contributing in $27 increments, volunteering, attending rallies & meetings, spreading the social media buzz, phone banking, canvassing, attending our local party caucus, standing for delegate to the national convention, and, of course, voting in the primary.
But… I keep asking myself, what comes next? A “Political Revolution” has to be about more than one candidate and one office. And I find I’m not the only one asking. My wife said “you know something about organizing & online democracy, you should write a book.” I thought about it a bit, and somewhat inspired by Bill McKibben & 350.org (write a book on climate change, then build organizing tools for a movement) – I checked to see if the domain “PoliticalRevolution” was available (you know, branding). It was, at a VERY premium price - and in a fit of what might yet prove to be madness, I plunked down credit card to register politicalrevolution.net, .com, and .org. And then I had to figure out what to do next.
So…. I’m setting out on a journey to answer four questions: WHO are the Political Revolution (Who are WE)? What is a Political Revolution? What do we do next? And, how do we do it?
I’m going to do this by continuing to volunteer, across the country; interviewing the people who are coming together around the campaign; blogging my travels; and then writing a book about it. In the process, I’ll grow the blog into a social network – a place where we can connect in ways that outlast this election cycle, where we can discuss, plan, organize, and act together.
