My documentary students met at my apartment this morning, very near Columbus Circle, to film and participate in the ‘Crush Trump’ protest/festival. It was amazing, incredible, and life affirming.
We got there at 11 a.m., but by noon there were close to three hundred people and once the rally began and the march to 5th Avenue snaked down Central Park West, I estimate there were closer to five hundred people.
Early in the event:
There were so many young people there — my own students included — and then a few ladies from protests of the past.
The march made its way across Central Park South, down 5th Ave., across 57th, down Madison Ave., then a right on 56th back to 5th — until we weren’t allowed to go any further. Trump’s 5th Avenue building (Trump Tower) was completely shut down and off limits. A few highlights:
Although the Trump Tower was off limits, I managed to sneak into the blocked off area and was actually escorted by a very nice police man — they thought I was trying to get back to my apartment:). I am good that way — hahaha.
What an extraordinary event. I am so blessed to be teaching in this fantastic city and to be surrounded daily by the most incredibly talented students/filmmakers. They inform my life each and every day and in turn I try to create a few adventures for them.
We shot an amazing amount of video, which we will be organizing and editing and I hope to have a small film to share with you all when we’re done. As well as dozens of stills.
One final note: THE YOUTH VOTE MATTERS! They are informed, passionate, and care very deeply about this planet. I am in solidarity with them.
