I haven’t posted a diary since the year Barack Obama became president, but I felt the need to do one now because I feel we’re at a crossroads, not just in this country, but the entire planet.
I live in Michigan, and the night before the primary, I got a Facebook message from a friend. Actually, she was the ex-wife of my pastor. She and her ex-husband are both democrats and fairly liberal, although our religion is not, so it wasn’t a total surprise that she’d messaged me. She asked me to be sure to vote in the primary, along with information about the Bernie campaign and a request that I vote for him.
I don’t post a lot of political stuff on my social media so I’m not sure if she even realized I was a supporter, but I assured her that I, my husband, and our two adult millennial daughters would all #FeelTheBern the next day. Bernie had a fantastic win in Michigan, and I’m so glad that my family had a part in that.
I know my friend hadn’t only contacted me, she’d probably contacted several people, and maybe her efforts had made someone decide to vote for Bernie, or make the effort to vote when they weren’t sure they would, or reminded them about the primary being the next day. I’m sure she was a part of making a difference for Bernie in Michigan.
If you can take a few moments to reach out to people on your social media — message friends on Facebook, send out a Tweet, post an image on Instagram, or any other social media you frequent — it could go a long way to helping Bernie score major wins. Perhaps someone you contact will do the same with their friends. Think of it like ripples on a pond.
I am very concerned about the future of this country, for the future for our democracy, and for the planet my children are going to inherent. Establishment politics, incrementalism, and going along to get along are not going to change things. We need a political revolution — before it’s too late.
