I was watching a guilty pleasure, Robert Rodriguez’s Machete. As I’m watching it, I’m getting a really uncomfortable feeling and shaking my head.
When it first came out, some people didn’t get it and took it seriously. There was a lot of criticism about it being racist, exploitative, etc. The didn’t get that Rodriquez was doing an homage to the films like that from the 60’s. He wrote broad satire and things that were so far out that they wouldn’t be taken seriously, things like an electrified fence along the Mexican border, calling illegal immigrants parasites and terrorists….sound familiar? Robert DeNiro even resembles Trump in many of the scenes.
What started out as satire is no longer satire. It’s actually what’s coming out of a real politician’s mouth.
I don’t know about you, but that scares me to death.
