Some of my friends who support Bernie Sanders think I'm all in for Hillary Clinton. And some of my Hillary friends just presume I'm a Bernie guy.
Here's who I support for president: The Democrat.
I like both candidates a lot, and both of them have at least one flaw that I really dislike. For instance, I don't like the way Clinton’s people keep saying that Sanders would “destroy Obamacare and start all over again.” I also don't understand why Sanders gets such a huge pass over his horrible record on gun control. (Note to Hillary haters: imagine how much more you'd hate her if she was the one with Sanders’ gun control record.)
But I do not care about those flaws – not one bit.
We're not only voting for president in November, we're voting for the Supreme Court. We're voting for the wonderful freedoms that Democratic Supreme Courts gave us during many years before Reagan.
For instance, does anyone believe we would've gotten abortion rights or the abolition of separate-but-equal schools under the reactionary Supreme Court of the last 30 years? Does anyone think a Democratic Supreme Court would've allowed Citizens United, stopped the vote count in Florida in 2000 or destroyed the Voting Rights Act?
The next president will likely get to name Scalia’s replacement AND replace two Democratic justices who are now or will soon be in their 80’s. Are you really going to sit out the election in November if your candidate doesn't get the nomination?
I hope we all vote our hearts in the primaries. I'm not at all sure who has more of my heart, I think either of our candidates would make a splendid president, not just one who is infinitely preferable to Donald Trump.
And even more, I hope if your candidate doesn't get the nomination, you vote for the Democrat in November – and for a Democratic Supreme Court.
