There’s been a lot of talk on right wing media about the “Millennial” generation. You may have heard some Fox News rhetoric claiming the generation isn’t smart enough to cast a ballot, or you may have seen their ridiculous video clip questioning scantily clad beach goers on historical events. It’s obvious where they’re going and how they wish to portray these young adults. Right wing media has called them lazy, uniformed and immature, there seems to be no end to their list of negative adjectives.
They are so wrong…
Not every young adult is a historical or political wiz, but then again neither are many adults. What they do know is what they hear and see and most are remarkably astute at separating spin from truth. Perhaps that is why the right feels the need to belittle them - they know millennials don’t buy into tabloid reporting or shallow promises.
I recently had a conversation with my youngest daughter; she’s a millennial and has never shown much interest in politics. At least I thought she hasn’t. I asked her a simple question, “Have you or any of your friends heard about Senator Bernie Sanders?” The words that poured from her mouth set me back; in a verbal rampage she discussed in detail every single thing that is wrong in our country. She began with Citizens United, Equal Rights, Discrimination, Fair Pay, Over Time, Voting Rights and ended with political corruption. I was at a loss for words; her scope of knowledge overwhelmed and pleased me. She went on to say that these are the things she and her friends talk about in between doing whatever twenty something year olds do. I didn’t have to ask who she was voting for, I already knew the answer.
The millennials are no longer the silent generation; they’re fighters ready to change a corrupt system and won’t stop until they succeed. They should never be underestimated because they play video games and seem aloof; they’re smarter than given credit for. Perhaps that is why so many are
clamoring to listen to Senator Sanders whenever he speaks. They relate to his words and appreciate that they are being spoken” to” and not “at” them. It’s likely because of this that the media feels a need to try to discredit them, after all the last thing they want is a group of people who will threaten their comfy arrangement.
Below is an article and video’s about the massive youth turnout, it’s pretty much says it all.
