Ray Tomlinson, best known for sending the first email and choosing the @ symbol to represent user@host, passed away yesterday at 74. He contributed to computer networking, ARPAnet (predecessor to the internet), and later the internet by creating and inspiring some of the core networking technologies that we still use even now. Without his contributions to computer science and technology, we would not all be here communicating on dailykos today.
I have had the honor of meeting Ray and getting some programming advice from him. He was both smart and kind. I would like to extend a thanks to him for his work and the significant contribution he has made to humanity.
