Women are letting Indiana Gov. Mike Pence know what they think about him practicing medicine without a license by signing a law banning abortions due to fetal abnormalities. It’s a law that the director of communications for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says will “forc[e] woman and families to suffer emotionally because they’re going to be forced to carry pregnancies that are not viable.” Women like this one, if she lived in Indiana.
In response, women are participating in the “Periods for Pence” campaign, calling into the governor’s office to describe what’s going on with them reproductively:
“I need to get a message to the Governor that I am on day three of my period. My flow seems abnormally heavy, but my cramps are much better to–” she explained to the person covering the phones.”
“MA’AM, WHAT IS IT THAT I CAN HELP YOU WITH?” they replied.
“Oh, I don’t need your help, I just wanted to keep Governor Pence informed of my reproductive cycle, since he seems so concerned,” the woman explained.
It’s a funny response, but the Indiana law is still going to make women suffer. But for Republicans like Pence, that’s a feature, not a bug.
