So apparently NY passed a $15 minimum hourly wage for the state. My first thought is that I know many people who will benefit from this and am happy for them. (Including some in-laws)
My next thought is that Gov-NY Andrew Cuomo has helped REPUBLICANS win state senate seats. So my next thought is...WHAT’S THE CATCH?
Well apparently all NY’ers are NOT created equal. Some are more equal than others.
In New York City, the wage would increase from $9 to $15 by the end of 2018, though businesses with fewer than 10 employees would get an extra year.
Ok, they are moving that along pretty quickly if you are in NY City.
On Long Island and in Westchester County, the wage would rise to $15 by the end of 2022.
I guess they are just a bit too far from the city and by 2022, that $15 in 2018 will be worth a lot less in 2022.
The increases are even more drawn out upstate, where the wage would hit $12.50 in 2021 and then increase to $15 based on an undetermined schedule.
Well not just our “esteemed” *cough, cough* governor, but many Kossacks here have had the attitude that NY is just NYC. By 2021 Upstate gets to $12.50 (hmm, wonder who gave him the idea to go to JUST 12), with a FUZZY $15 in the future. Well all those people in upstate that cheered the news of $15 and being able to actually try and live, well I guess Cuomo and the NY=NYC only crowd put them in their place.
Well, Why am I complaining, as least there is a plan in place. Read on
The governor said beginning in 2019, the state can suspend scheduled increases if economic conditions warrant it.
Sen. Martin Golden, a Brooklyn Republican, said the minimum wage hikes have different time lines and they’ll watch its impact on businesses. The legislation beginning in 2019 directs state budget officials to analyze the economy in each region of New York and the effect of the wage increases statewide to determine whether to temporarily suspend scheduled hikes.
Well NYC is guaranteed $15 by 2018, so they wont be affected, but the rest of NY? Bait and switch and a giant FUCK YOU to the working people outside of NYC.
So before we go championing NY for this $15 minimum wage, why don’t people truly look, it really isn’t for the state, just NYC, and FUCK THE REST OF NY!
