Several weeks ago, I did a diary on songs either originally by or covered by Bruce Springsteen. Last week a friend shared with me another cover song that absolutely transfixed me, and I set out to craft another songlist. So wake up little Susie (c’mon, it’s only just 10PM on the East Coast, no napping yet!) and follow Mrs. Robinson around the invisible orange rock (or is it an island?) after a word from our sponsor…
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I don’t know a person of my generation who didn’t grow up knowing the music of Simon & Garfunkel. My parents had their albums (big vinyl things, grooves that made the music happen when played on a “record player”) and I am pretty sure everyone I knew owned the soundtrack of The Concert in Central Park. So tonight, breathe in the scent of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme and enjoy these covers! Original is linked in the title, the covers are in the band names, and first up is the song that started this all!
-
The Sound Of Silence — The most beautiful cover of this I’ve ever heard is by Disturbed. I love it so much that instead of a second artist, I’m giving you the official video. Both are stunning.
- Hazy Shade of Winter — The most popular cover is probably that of The Bangles, but I also likethis one by She Wants Revenge.
- Mrs. Robinson — The cover most today may recognize is by the Lemonheads, but did you know Frank Sinatra also did a cover?
- Bridge Over Troubled Water — I love John Legend even more, for this version.
- American Tune — Covered absolutely beautifully by another ethereal vocal duo, the Indigo Girls
-
I Am A Rock — Punk rock, that is, by The Church.
-
Cecilia — h/t to JustOneMore Dad for finding this Local Natives version. As well as this one by The Vamps. Long live Youtube!
-
Scarborough Fair — Yeah, 16th century tune so really, even Simon and Garfunkel were a cover :). But work with me, and listen to this lovely version by Queensrÿche.
-
The Boxer — hands down without a doubt, my favorite version of this is by Mumford and Sons. This particular version takes it to eleven with the addition of Emmylou Harris.
Any versions strike your fancy? Please share in the comments, or bring whatever else makes you happy, while we get to what you really come here for!! Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures, formatted by our own dear BeninSC!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
Note: Especially during this passionate primary season, please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Contact brillig.
My favorite quote of the day (in

RedDan (in
this diary)— how does something like this get to “top quotes”—? (Ed. note: we got it there, moondanc, thank you!)
“I’m for Sanders to get the nom, but will swim through gasoline to vote for the Democrat”
