We are in a year where the people are catching on in large numbers. The control political parties have over elections is incompatible with democracy. Elections should be run by commissions that represent all the people not just dominant parties.
The selection of candidates needs to be put into the hands of the people. If there are to be primaries they must be open to anyone willing to run. The electorate should include every citizen. The purpose of the primary should be to narrow the field and the top four or five winners should go on to the general election. Party affiliation should have nothing to do with this selection.
The two party system has effectively been a means for denying people a real voice in the the choice of who governs us. This has been clear to some for a long time. Helen Keller made it clear back in her day.
This way of controlling people is tightly linked to the ability of capitalism to dominate. It is also tightly linked to the marginalization of anyone outside the capitalist inner circles. It stabilizes institutional racism, sexism and other forms of dividing people and keeping them powerless.
The covers are falling off and the system is becoming visible to the people. More and more are not liking what they see.
Maybe it will be a harder struggle than many thought but they begin to know that the struggle is necessary. Power to the people. Bring on real democracy.
