I think many can agree that New York, though one of the most progressive states in the country, has some of the WORST voting laws in the nation.
In New York state absentee balloting is STRICKTLY limited (you must prove you will be out of town or that you have some sort of debilitating condition). There is no early voting (unlike 37 other states which DO have early voting), and same-day registration on election day is not allowed ( New York's constitution requires voters to register at least ten days before a state wide election). New York also does not allow out-of-precinct voting.
Another problem voters face in New York is that if you are an independent, the deadline to register as a democrat ( or a republican for that matter ) was October the 9th of LAST year... The last day you could register to vote for new voters was March 25th, before even the Alaska, Hawaii and Washington State contests were held... Which dampens voter momentum for the winners of those contests like Bernie Sanders.
What does all this mean? Well, for one thing, it means that literally over 3 MILLION registered voters in the state of New York will NOT be able to vote in tomorrows primary about 60% of them dem-leaning independents. That's a lot, especially when you consider Hillary Clinton won the 2008 New York Primary over then-candidate Obama by a little over 317 thousand votes...
Insult was done to injury when we discovered that New York had decided to not open polling until 12 noon eastern instead of at 6 AM for people to be able to vote before work or school.
Disenfranchisement of voters is something we have come to expect of deep red states dominated by extremist GOP politicians to drive down voter turn-out. It is extremely disappointing to see it happen in one of the most progressive states in the Union.
