Democrats want unity? Fearful of Trump? Here's a modest proposal for Hillary supporters.
Try to influence your candidate to re-examine her positions that offend Democrats and Independents who are still alive to the promises of Roosevelt, who recognized when a dangerous economic climate threatened the Republic. Put pressure on your candidate to re-examine her commitments to a militarized foreign policy, or her complacency with financial institutions and inequality. Refrain from demanding that Dems and Independents endorse these positions so alien the better traditions of the Democratic Party. In these ways, act pragmatically to put pressure on Hillary to narrow the gap between Sanders and Clinton agendas.
Of course, if you really like Clinton's right of center agenda, then by all means call for the shut down of Sanders' progressive campaign--this message is not for you .
But for the rest, think about how you can help Hillary feel the weight of Bernie's message, rather than calling on him to stop repeating it. Because--unfortunately if you like--many many Sanders supporters do have principles on these points, and many cannot be counted on to yield them come November. People with principles are like that.
If Clinton supporters follow their candidate's lead in defending our foreign policy and financial establishments, then they will inevitably alienate many progressive Democrats, and, yes, we will then likely have a Pres. Trump.
