I never thought this would be my first diary, but of the online communities I follow, this seems to be the best place to ask:
My wife and I want a set of these.
Unfortunately, we’re Canadian citizens living in Canada, so buying them outright through the campaign website is an obvious no-no. I’m reasonably certain that we could find a US-citizen friend that would be fine with making the purchase FOR us, but I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t also run afoul of the same laws if we reimbursed them. (The fine print on the check out page of the website reinforces that impression). IANAL, nor do I pretend to be, so I’m looking for a legal way to acquire a set of these without violating US campaign finance law. My naive understanding is that it’s possible only the amount over the wholesale price of the product could be considered a donation, so we might be okay if we only reimbursed the individual in question the approximate wholesale price (if we could even determine that). Given “political junkie” is pretty much a required designation for users here, are there any suggestions on a resource to consult?
