We are in the final three weeks of the primary here in Nevada, as early voting starts on Saturday, May 28th. And as a reminder, we urge all Nevada voters to check their registration and make sure it is all current, as we will need your vote to turn Nevada blue, up and down the ballot.
When I jumped into this race, I was told that I was crazy to do so. A 29-year old without a lot of money and no major endorsements. We were laughed out of the room in November, but those laughs quickly faded as people knew we were fighters and believers in a more Progressive future. We quickly gained respect and pushed our message for a more inclusive party. We may not win over every voter, but we know that when we walk out of an event, we’ve earned the respect of the voters.
If I told you that I know who will win this primary come June 14th; I’d be lying to you. That is something I won’t do. What I will say is that we feel great about where we are and have heard great things from party operatives regarding our support. At the end of the day, a grassroots campaign with $4,500 in donations is in the game with three weeks to go. We have kept out dignity, health and have not engaged in drive-by political attacks or underhanded tactics to sway support. All political issues we’ve raised with our opponents have been fact based, researchable issues.
As many of you know, I do suffer from a disability as I have a severe case of Ulcerative Colitis that has forced me onto Social Security Disability. While it was unfortunate that one of my primary opponents attacked me for having a disability, it was only a matter of time before this individual went personal AND negative. I am not ashamed or sorry for my disability, as it has made me the person I am today. For those of you who have asked for an update on my health, here is my health update: I am healthy (as much as can be expected), I am working hard telling our story and winning over voters one at a time, but I am also always putting my health and family first. If I am so honored to be picked to represent this district in Congress, I will be a fierce advocate for equality, fairness and opportunity and my disability will NOT affect my ability to do so.
From the very beginning, we have been fighting on the issues and have been consistent on the issues. I am also aware that in Congress, there will be negotiations and compromises on progress. I will not sell out my ideas, but what I will do is negotiate to make my constituents lives better.
The issues I am fighting for:
- A $15 minimum wage, so that no one is working 40+ hours a week and still living in poverty.
- Swift and bold action on Climate Change, switching our energy portfolio to clean, renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro technology.
- Protecting and advancing women’s rights by guaranteeing pay equality, paid maternity leave and keeping a woman’s right to choose between a woman, a doctor and her family.
- Making equal rights a reality for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters, by stopping workplace discrimination, “bathroom bills” and “religious freedom bills” as well as funding anti-bullying and suicide prevention for school-aged children who are finding it hard to be who they are.
- Taking care of our Veterans, so that our real life living heroes are taken care of once they leave the battlefield. We need to modernize the VA, end homelessness, drug addiction, joblessness and treat wounds both seen AND unseen for our Veterans.
- Working toward ending Citizens United and getting money out of politics once and for all. As a grassroots candidate, we will set an example for how a campaign can be people powered and people responsive.
- Making sure that Black Lives DO Matter in America. We will do so by passing legislation that demilitarizes our police, holds police accountable for abuse and making sure that our society is equal for all Americans.
- We will work on passing comprehensive immigration reform and hold firm in our demand that any legislation MUST contain a path to citizenship. Our undocumented citizens must be given a path to citizenship so that they too can become Americans in the only way they are not: on paper.
- We will work toward a single-payer healthcare system so that we can truly have a universal health care system that covers every American. In the meantime, while we work toward that goal, I will work tirelessly to improve upon and protect Obamacare and the gains we have made.
- We will once again make college affordable and achievable for ALL Americans, regardless of the financial situation of a child’s family. We will work to make public universities and colleges tuition-free so that ALL children who are accepted into college can attend college. I will also work on legislation to reduce student loan debt, by allowing student’s to renegotiate the terms of their loans as well as working on a loan forgiveness program for struggling graduates.
- We will work to EXPAND, not reform, the social safety net in our country. As someone who is familiar with Social Security, Social Security Disability, Medicaid, and Medicare, I will be a fierce proponent of these programs and be an example of how they can bridge the gap and provide dignity for those in need.
As a Congressman, issues will come across my desk every day, and I will be diligent and forthcoming on how I decide my positions on the issues. I will be responsive to you, the American people, both inside and outside of my district. I don’t take lightly this campaign to serve my country, and it has been an absolute honor these past eight months, but we are not done yet. We still have work to do, and if you can join me in the final three weeks of the campaign, we will achieve victory together!
Thank you,
