Hillary Clinton hits Donald Trump on housing crisis comments
COMMERCE, CALIFORNIA Hillary Clinton blasted Donald Trump on Tuesday for cheering the housing market crash as an opportunity to get rich.
"He actually said he was hoping for the crash that caused hard working families in California and across America to lose their homes," Clinton said, speaking at a rally with union members at a training facility in Commerce, in Los Angeles County, "all because he thought he could take advantage of it to make some money for himself."
Here is what Trump had said at the time right before the major recession hit in 2008:
Trump, asked about predictions of a forthcoming housing market crash, responded:
“I sort of hope that happens because then, people like me would go in and buy.”
Trump added:
“If there is a bubble burst, as they call it, you know you can make a lot of money.”
I guess he got his wish. The crisis that hit so many people very hard was just another buying opportunity for him.
And Hillary highlights her strong commitment to reign in Wall Street, contrasting it to Donald Trump’s agenda of rolling back any regulations and just letting Wall Street “do what it does”.
"Now he says he wants to roll back the financial regulations that we have imposed on Wall Street to let them run wild again," she said. "I'll tell you what -- you and I together -- we're not going to let him."
Hillary’s team has released a new ad highlighting this important issue, and how Trump was rooting for the crisis to occur, in his own words via audio:
Earlier Tuesday, Clinton's campaign released a new web video highlighting Trump's past comments, as part of a coordinated effort to discredit his commitment to working families.
"In 2006, Donald Trump was hoping for a real estate crash," said the voiceover in the video. The video then uses clip of Trump from that year, when he said in a Trump University audiobook that "if there is a bubble burst, as they call it, you can make a lot of money."
Across more than half a dozen battleground states, including Ohio and Florida, Clinton surrogates fanned out to call attention to what Trump said.
"Not sure how you can make America great again by rooting for it to fail, so you can make a quick buck," said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn on a call with reporters, invoking Trump's slogan.
The Democratic National Committee and state parties followed Clinton's lead, and piled on.
"Donald Trump's lack of concern for the economic well-being of hard-working families shows that he doesn't have the judgement and temperament to occupy the Oval Office," said DNC communications director Luis Miranda in a statement.
RIVERSIDE, CA rally at UC Riverside
In the afternoon Hillary held a rally at the University of California, Riverside campus:
Hillary Clinton didn't waste any time in targeting Donald Trump as she began speaking at a Riverside rally Tuesday saying California will send the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a message on June 7.
It's a message she said "that Donald Trump will hear no matter where he is, that California wants a positive future."
Trump’s remarks “may have started out as entertainment but now it’s really concerning," she said.
“I don’t want what he says to go unanswered,” said Clinton, adding "You're fired" won't work in the White House.
Clinton touted the burgeoning economy of the 90s and blamed Republicans for today's inequality, promising to raise taxes on the wealthy. She told the crowd that she will work for immigration reform, will take on the gun lobby, and promised to support a US Supreme Court justice who would overturn Citizens United.
