Really, go read Dahlia Lithwick’s latest commentary. Do it now.
Fellow Liberals, Let’s Stop Doing These Things
I count myself among the many silent liberals who have largely kept their feelings on Bernie versus Hillary to themselves—partly because each speaks to me in different ways. But largely because, faced with the specter of a hateful orange man suffering from personality disorders that should have been disqualifying being elected president, the war between the Bernie people and Hillary people always felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford. It’s not that I don’t care which of them is the Democratic nominee. It’s just that I care far more about staving off the apocalypse. Also, my response to the very existence of Donald Trump as a serious contender for the presidency has been one of anger. I am angry almost always. Pouring more kerosene on the anger strikes me as pointless.
Now I say this, as a Bernie support, who feels very unwelcome in what has been my political home since 2004. I dread reading the comments on a diary because they quickly devolve into pissing matches. So, can’t we all just get along. And Markos, honestly, your recent diaries have just been more pissing into the pond, at least if unifying the party means anything to you.
So, let me start.
1) I stipulate that Hillary Clinton has won the primary. If other Bernie support think that makes me a sell out, so be it.
2) Further, I will vote for Hillary Clinton in the general election. Honestly, IMO, if you believe in progressive values I simply can’t understand how you would stay home or support another candidate when your choice would like help elect that guy running as a Republican (I don’t even want to say is name).
Now, I don’t feel like going any further. And part of the reason is how people I believe should be my allies have treated those of us that support another candidate. Call me what you want. But if what you have to say isn’t supportive on unifying Democrats, and Democratic leaning indies toward defeating… that bully, then I’d rather you kept it to yourself.
Let’s come together and keep the presidency in Democratic hands, elect more and better Democrats to all levels of our government.
