The NRA is happy to meet with Donald Trump they say. They also say that the NRA "believes that terrorists should not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms, period."
But then they get into the qualifiers:
Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing…. That has been the position of Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and a majority of the U.S. Senate. Sadly President Obama and his allies would prefer to play politics with this issue.
Well, not really. The NRA-approved Cornyn amendment allows for just a 72-hour delay for investigation, and then the gun sale can go through even if the investigation isn't done. Here's the other thing about that Cornyn amendment that failed in December: he guaranteed it would fail by including a restriction on federal funding to "sanctuary cities," or those who don't comply with federal immigration law. That was hardly a good-faith "compromise" from Cornyn. That much was clear in the simple fact that it was pre-approved by the NRA (because a Republican isn't going to put a gun bill on the floor otherwise).
This time around, Trump and the NRA are basically setting it up so Cornyn can offer this bullshit "compromise" again, and then blame the Democrats for just politicizing another tragedy when the amendment fails. As of Tuesday, the Democratic author of the bill, Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she'd be open to compromise. In the talking filibuster Senate Democrats are currently conducting, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) nixed that idea, phrasing his statement as a question as the rules of a filibuster require.
I know I have talked to the senator from Connecticut and all of my colleagues here that on our side of the aisle we are willing to compromise. […] I would just ask the senator the question, isn't it true we don't want to compromise so we can say we did something and not really close both of these loopholes? That a compromise that says, for instance, that's built around what the senator from Texas has said, which is you will have to go to court to prove that the person might be a terrorist and after three days you can get a gun and no court proceeding can take that long would be a meaningless compromise, a phyrric victory and it's the kind of thing that the vast majority, at least about all of us on our side of the aisle, could not accept?
Democrats are going to try, Murphy is doing his damnedest to force votes on closing the terrorist gap and background check loopholes. With Trump, the NRA and Cornyn all on the same page of having Potemkin legislation, there's not going to be a solution this time, either.
