I am shocked to my soul right now.
A dear friend, a man who I’ve known and loved for many decades, put up a post today on Facebook in which he wished, quite sincerely, that Hillary Clinton would meet a gruesome and violent death. He provided details.
I’ve seen a couple of similar things this season, but this has stunned me almost to catatonia. This isn’t a troll. This isn’t a right-wing bully. It’s a gentle, loving man who has stood against prejudice and hate. I feel like I’ve been punched.
I’m told by friends they’ve seen similar sentiments expressed about Bernie Sanders. I have not seen such, but the people who report it are trustworthy.
What is happening to us?
Sure, I’ve cracked a few snide jokes at both candidates’ expense. I’ve said things I regret. Put up an ill-advised photoshop or two.
But this… I’m at a loss.
“Politics is bloodsport.” No, it’s not. It’s politics.
I have come to support Mrs. Clinton’s campaign. Earlier I supported Mr. Sanders.
Never did I imagine I would hear rhetoric from the supporters of either candidate that is indistinguishable from the violent hate speech of a Trumpette or Radio Rwanda.
I’m sorry if this is somewhat disjointed. I’m pretty rattled.
Just…
Peace.
Please.
Update: Though I haven’t heard back from my friend, he appears to have pulled the post from his page. I’m glad of that. I don’t want people to think this is who he is.
Update 2: Just got a message from him. He’s indeed in a lot of pain and trying to balance meds vs. work, assured me it was metaphor, however unfortunate, and didn’t wish harm to anyone. That gentle breeze you just felt is my sigh of relief.
