So often I hear 2nd amendment supporters fall back on "it's not just hunting, it's not just personal protection, it's about protecting the country from tyranny."
Well, news like today’s shooting in Baton Rouge or last week’s shooting in Dallas is what you get with that stance. Whether it's members of religious or racial minorities, or wackos like the people in the Bundy clan, you get people feeling oppressed and thinking they need to "stand up to tyranny". As a result, you get idiots shooting at cops. We should like most cops. We all like a civil society, right?
But what stopping REAL tyranny? At the small scale, abuses in the police force (local tyrants abusing power) are being called out by cell phone videos and social media. Meanwhile at the largest scale possible, Friday night we watched a full-blown military coup turned back without citizens reaching for guns. What stopped that? Their president getting on Facetime and calling for assembly in the streets. The internet and social media is what REALLY stops tyranny in this modern, technological age.
How do we convince gun lovers that their fundamental argument has been disproven?
