Donald Trump paid a call on Republicans in Washington, D.C. today. First, a large number of Republicans suddenly found that they were too busy to visit with their presidential nominee. Then those House Republicans who did stop in for a visit, got a repeat of Trump's stump speech including his lauding of Saddam Hussein and his love for non-existent articles of the Constitution.
But Trump’s visit didn’t stop at the telling the House about the joys of ignoring people’s rights. He also had to take a trip to visit with Republican Senators, so he could continue making unity.
Donald Trump’s private meeting Thursday with Senate Republicans — designed to foster greater party unity ahead of the national convention in Cleveland — grew combative as the presumptive presidential nominee admonished three senators who have been critical of his candidacy and predicted they would lose their reelection bids, according to two Republican officials with direct knowledge of the exchanges.
So … Trump showed up to visit with Republican Senators and proceeded to grow unity by singling out three of them as losers. What did that moment of unity sound like?
Trump said at the meeting that he has yet to attack [Jeff] Flake [R-AZ] hard but threatened to begin doing so….
Characterizing [Mark] Kirk [R-IL] as a loser, Trump vowed that he would carry Illinois in the general election even though the state traditionally has been solidly Democratic in presidential contests. ...
Trump also singled out Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), who has refused to support Trump and has emerged as perhaps the most vocal advocate for a third-party candidate.
Sasse’s office had a particularly direct comment on his willingness to attend Trump’s coronation.
Ben Sasse (Neb.) — Spokesman: “Sen. Sasse will not be attending the convention and will instead take his kids to watch some dumpster fires across the state, all of which enjoy more popularity than the current front-runners.”
Ah. Sweet unity.
