From Amanda Coyne at the greenville news: A new poll commissioned by the S.C. Democratic Party shows presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton tied with 39 percent of the vote each when voters are faced with a choice between Republican candidate Trump, Democratic candidate Clinton, Green Party candidate Jill Stein and Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson. The amount of support Johnson and Stein attracted was not included in a party statement.
When voters are faced with a head-to-head choice, Trump tops Clinton by two points in the poll conducted by the Feldman Group. Trump received 45 percent of poll respondents' support, while Clinton received 43 percent.
S.C. Republican Party Chairman Matt Moore dismissed the poll as "bogus" on Twitter shortly after the data was announced, saying that internal polling of South Carolina showed a safe lead for Trump. South Carolina has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
The poll was debuted on the "Rachel Maddow Show" on Tuesday night. Maddow, a liberal TV personality, said that while the poll was commissioned by Democrats and that the Feldman Group was a "Democratic polling firm," the results were "legit."
Clinton leads among voters under age 45 by 9 percentage points, while Trump leads Clinton among white independent voters by a 37-point margin -- 59 percent to 22 percent. Clinton has a significant lead among African-American voters, receiving 91 percent of their support.
S.C. Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison appeared on the "Rachel Maddow Show" on Tuesday night to announce the poll's findings.
"The future is bright for Democrats in South Carolina," Harrison said.
Trump led Clinton by 2 percentage points in a Public Policy Polling poll earlier this month. That poll was also commissioned by the S.C. Democratic Party. The S.C. Republican Party has not commissioned any presidential polling since Trump became the Republican nominee, and no independent polling has been conducted on Trump and Clinton head-to-head since November 2015.
