Missouri Republican Sen. Roy Blunt had no qualms about sending America's sons and daughters into President George W. Bush's war of choice in Iraq. In fact, he was one of those Republicans bashing President Obama for not keeping them there. Unfortunately for Blunt, his opponent in this election had no qualms about serving. He enlisted in the 1-115th Infantry Battalion of the Army National Guard in 2003, and in October of 2006 was deployed to Afghanistan as a military intelligence officer.
Lest you think a military intelligence officer was a cushy job in the Army, think again, at least as far as Kander is concerned.
As an intelligence officer, Kander was responsible for analyzing and advising superiors about political and military threats to the U.S.-backed Afghan government. A military evaluation report said "Kander's hard work directly resulted in arresting enemies and saving lives." It also said he was one of only a few officers to volunteer as a shooter on convoys, though Kander said he never had to fire at enemies.
Kander has made his military records public, for everyone to read the reports from his commanders. After his honorable discharge from the Missouri National Guard in November 2011, he continued serving the public as Missouri's secretary of state.
When it comes to the critical job of deciding whether to send Americans into war, I know who I'd rather have in the Senate.
