Last week, Sen. Marco Rubio hoped that Donald Trump would learn more about Vladimir Putin—"an authoritarian thug who is accountable to no one"— and change his mind about being Putin's BFF. Patrick Murphy's campaign decided to do some research and found out that Rubio might just be the most (futilely) hopeful Trump supporter there is.
Back in May, Trump said NATO was obsolete and maybe we shouldn't be responsible for continuing to protect our allies. Mr. Self-Proclaimed Foreign Policy Expert Marco Rubio responded to that with "as he learns more about them, the way a nominee should and a president will, he will have more information upon which to make decisions on these issues ... My hope is that he can be persuaded away from those sorts of positions."
Then in June, after a series of racist attacks from Trump on U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, on Elizabeth Warren, and after he suggested women should be held criminally liable for having abortions, Rubio said "I’ll continue to encourage him to make the right choices on some issues." Because clearly he's had such an effect so far.
When later in June Trump said what the world really needs is more nukes, Rubio defended him, saying "on a lot of issues he still hasn't defined himself and I think he's in the process of doing that ... And he's going to have the next three months to go out and make the argument to the American people and help us envision him as president."
And in July, when he learned that Trump's campaign had intervened in the RNC platform to make it more Putin-friendly, Rubio was—of course—hopeful.
"My hope is that once Donald gets there and begins to learn more about this and all of the information regarding not just what Putin is doing, but who Putin is and what he's trying to do that he will change opinion on some of these things based on new information he'll have access to that perhaps he doesn't have access to right now."
Uh huh. In case you haven’t noticed, Marco, it's September. Trump has had an awful lot of time—and incentive—to "learn" all these lessons you would teach him. It's not working. So why aren't you learning?
Can you pitch in with $3 to help Patrick Murphy retire Trump-apologist Rubio?
