Since no one else is taking Trump’s child care plan seriously, I thought I’d shine a little light on it. There’s an early critique up on the Washington Post Wonkblog: www.washingtonpost.com/…
It doesn’t appear to pass muster:
Experts on child care are skeptical, though. The cost of the plan for the government could be exorbitant, and it is not clear how the policy would help poor and middle-class families. More affluent families would likely save the most money under the plan.
Even conservatives are not impressed, although I’m not at all surprised:
"I'm most concerned about a single mother who doesn’t earn a lot of money and who has a couple of kids at home," said Michael Strain, an economist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. "The benefits of this policy will not accrue to the people who most need help."
It’s too early and this plan is too unsubstantial to merit much derision.
My point is that this “Child care plan” is a gimmick to soak up some of the news cycle. He and Ivanka managed to kill some Media time last night and have the Media validate the “substantialness” (bigly substantialness, btw, ...huge. ) Meanwhile Trump lied quite brazenly about Hillary not having a child care policy...she does: www.hillaryclinton.com/…
Hillary surrogates and responsible journalists/pundits should spend a few minutes today slamming this “plan” and use it to illustrate the mechanism Trump has used to manipulate the Media.
