Arizona’s shining racist on a hill Sheriff joe Arpaio has some problems. No, not the deluge of evidence of corruption and racism and overreach that has been reported on over the past couple of years. No, not the hundreds of millions that the fiscally conservative, no-nonsense law enforcement bully has cost the fiscally conservative voting base of the Republican Party these past many years. A couple of months ago, Sheriff Joe came out in defense of Donald Trump and even found himself speaking at this year’s Republican National Convention. Part of that play for Sheriff Joe was the tenuous hold he has on his elected position during an election year. Unfortunately, Sheriff Joe’s stranglehold on his job may not be saved by aligning himself with a probably fake billionaire like Donald Trump, because a real billionaire may be gunning for the sheriff.
The Republican sheriff already was battered politically and support for him had been slipping when a group linked to Soros mounted an anti-Arpaio attack in an attempt to weaken his bid for a seventh straight term.
The group started sending fliers to Phoenix-area voters two weeks ago, and a mailing last week accuses Arpaio of separating a mother from her child because of an unpaid traffic ticket, botching hundreds of sex crimes investigations and scaring immigrants so much that that they don't report crime.
Sheriff Joe denies these charges, but considering how much of his bullshit has been so thoroughly exposed over the past year, it might not matter what Sheriff Joe says. Soros-backed campaigns, not unlike Koch brother campaigns, hit below the belt—and often.
In New Mexico, Soros gave $107,000 to Raul Torrez, the winner of the Democrat primary in June for the county that encompasses Albuquerque — prompting Republican Simon Kubiak to drop out.
Kubiak said he guaranteed Torrez victory because he could not raise the money he would have needed to counterattack and because he feared a barrage of negative ads.
While I don’t like billionaire money in politics and I hate the lessening of discourse through negative attack ads, I find it an interesting irony to watch Sheriff “eye for an eye” Joe getting his eyes taken from him.
