Lucy Van Trump held out his football today, and the media came running.
Trump declared that he would deliver a “major statement” today on the birther issue after five years in which he has constantly hammered on the issue. The press dutifully put on their striped shirt, lined up at the edge of the field, and got…
Ten minutes of Trump praising his new hotel. Which is great. The best in Washington DC and one of the great hotels in the world. Believe me. Trump also praised the General Services Administration, which is full of “spectacular people,” “tremendously talented people.” Which is worth noting because of what came next.
Rather than moving on to the birther issue, Trump passed the mic to a revolving group of past military personal who praised Trump. The highlights of the group were the one who said Trump had “never failed at anything” (if you don’t count marriage or business) and the one who blamed America’s failure on Washington bureaucrats (like those GSA people Trump just praised).
Trump then stepped up to give this stirring address:
“Hillary Clinton started the birther controversy”—which was a lie.
”I finished it”—which was a lie.
”President Obama was born in the United States, period.”—which is true.
Then he ran for it. And the press was left sitting on their ass, again, wondering why they always fall for the same trick.
Hey, take some picture of the hotel, why don’t you? Isn’t it the best.
