“I’m running for Congress out of necessity. I take a look around and I see that our government is broken, and I feel responsible to do my part to try and fix this on behalf of North Dakota.” –Chase Iron Eyes
On the second day of the North Dakota Democratic convention, the party decided to endorse Chase Iron Eyes from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe for the U.S. House of Representatives. He is challenging U.S. Rep Kevin Cramer, a Republican.
Chase was raised on the sprawling Standing Rock Sioux reservation by his mother. He went to college at the University of North Dakota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2000 double majoring in Political Science and Native American Studies. He would go on to law school at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where he would earn his law degree in 2007.
Chase would later help found the massively popular and influential Native on-line news, opinion and advocacy site lastrealindians.com through which he supported efforts to save the sacred site Pe’ Sla, raise funds to purchase wood pellet stoves for tribal members, and challenge an attempt by White Supremacists to tried to take over the town of Leith, North Dakota in 2013.
More recently he has spoken out against the proposed Dakota Access pipeline, which he points out is a threat to all North Dakotan's.
While North Dakota has been a Republican stronghold, he feels many people are tired of business as usual politics and tired of the divisiveness brought on by the Trump campaign, Rep. Cramer endorses Donald Trump.
“We are betting that you will vote, you progressives, conscious & socially evolving, you Natives, young people, all you who are ignored by politics & have ignored voting because politicians are completely detached from us.” ~Chase Iron Eyes
