It’s official — autumn is here. With our hot, dry climate in Colorado, a lot of flowers don’t really start to look spectacular until the weather cools and moisture arrives. They know the end is near but they are determined to go out in a blaze of glory! (At least, that’s what they do at my house).
Full disclosure: this nice combo of gazanias and pansies was at my sisters house. Gorgeous, isn’t it?!
Most of the roses have turned into hips, but I found a secret trove amidst the yellowing leaves by my office the other day….
I tried to find the time to work on the garden beds this summer but my job and commute time combined made it just impossible until I was able to find a job closer to home. I decided to concentrate on potted plants instead. Among the many pots I planted this year, I had Black-eyed Susans come up in the craziest places without any warning. These beauties are volunteers in a pot I had on the side porch. I’ll be curious to see where they decide to move to next spring.
I tried to put some color combos together, which I think looked pretty nice.
Zinnias and petunias rescued from the sale shelf at Lowe’s came into their own when some tender loving care was added.
Another good part of cooler weather is the motivation to get out into the gardens and weed, weed, weed! I’ve been neglecting them terribly this summer but I have more time now to start digging, re-working and revitalizing the gardens. Hopefully next year I’ll have some good stuff to show for it. I’ve had a few successes in the gardens, though. I had acquired some plants from my gardening buddy last summer and the Maximillian sunflowers came into their own this fall.
Charlie and I were traveling through Summit County last weekend and took a little hike to Old Dillon Reservoir to stretch our legs. I figured the fall colors at that altitude were probably at their peak and I was right.
We had been in Denver to check out some of the gems and minerals at the Denver Coliseum with my sisters. Here’s one of my really cool finds there….
I hope you enjoyed my photo-diary this morning. Happy fall gardening!
