Retired coal miners face the loss of their pensions due to no fault of their own, and Hillary Clinton is backing a bill that would protect their pensions so miners can live out the retirements they’ve earned:
“I firmly believe that if you spent your life keeping the lights on for our country, we can't leave you in the dark," the Democratic presidential candidate said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press.
Coal miners who have put their own health and safety at risk to provide the nation with affordable, reliable energy "are entitled to the benefits they have earned and the respect they deserve," said Clinton, who has faced a backlash from coal communities after she declared earlier this year that she was going to "to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business."
(Note: The market is already putting coal companies out of business. Clinton was talking about what’s going to replace a coal economy.)
Pension funds for 120,000 retired miners and their families are at risk of bankruptcy, and the question is whether the government will step in to protect them with the Coal Miners Protection Act. For all their rhetoric about being on the side of the miners, Republicans are the ones standing in the way, because this would involve helping union members, and we can’t have that, can we?
