• China plans to invest $361 billion in renewable energy installations by 2020:
China will plow 2.5 trillion yuan ($361 billion) into renewable power generation by 2020, the country's energy agency said on Thursday, as the world's largest energy market continues to shift away from dirty coal power towards cleaner fuels.
The investment will create over 13 million jobs in the sector, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said in a blueprint document that lays out its plan to develop the nation's energy sector during the five-year 2016 to 2020 period. [...]
The spending comes as the cost of building large-scale solar plants has dropped by as much as 40 percent since 2010. China became the world's top solar generator last year.
• On this date 76 years ago, FDR gave his four freedoms speech.
• Micah White, co-founder of Occupy Wall Street, has shifted his focus to hyper-local activism: White told a Guardian reporter that after police forcibly removed the Zuccotti Park tent camp in New York, it became apparent to him that traditional street protests are obsolete. He said: “It demonstrated that a mass movement in the streets doesn’t attain higher sovereignty over its government. It’s not protected from police violence or eviction. [...] The only thing that works is to merge protest with political parties. You have to win wars, or win elections.” His book The End of Protest: A New Playbook for Revolution, came out in March. White has taken his activist spirit to a tiny Oregon town where he is one of the few African Americans. It didn’t take long in town before he was running for mayor, a contest he lost this year by more than a 3-1 margin. But it’s not in him to give up.
• One of the Obama administration’s last acts: Releasing the gov’t plan for defending against killer asteroids:
On December 30, the White House quietly released its Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy, a 25-page document outlining the United States’ plans in the event that a giant asteroid is found to be on a collision course with Earth. Among the priorities outlined by the strategy are improving Near-Earth Object (NEO) detection, developing methods for deflecting asteroids, and developing interagency emergency procedures in the event of an NEO impact.

• Study shows Mediterranean diet has health effects on brain:
A new study shows that older people who followed a Mediterranean diet retained more brain volume over a three-year period than those who did not follow the diet as closely. The study is published in the January 4, 2017, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. But contrary to earlier studies, eating more fish and less meat was not related to changes in the brain.
The Mediterranean diet includes large amounts of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, beans and cereal grains such as wheat and rice, moderate amounts of fish, dairy and wine, and limited red meat and poultry.
