When these lyrics were written, I was responding to the lies and creeping loss of rights under Bush/Cheney. I thought we were angry then, but it was only a tiny spark compared to the raging flame of righteous justice now. The nation is at a flashpoint. I hope the major artists put their outrage on full display on this black friday. We minor artists who create music in our spare bedrooms certainly feel the flame. This song is now addressed to the illegitimate president, his deplorables, his fake press, and to the nation abused by them.
The truth is not something you tell, or something you buy or something you declare as real or fake. Truth is a light that is either hidden in the dark or it shines. When it is darkened too long, it rises in a firestorm. We have been watching the opposition trample on truth for eight years. We have watched (The illegitimate one) and his indentured servants fondling lies until our demand for the truth has become a nation’s rage.
Lyrics:
(Mr. Illegitimate)
You want me to tell it but no words will fit
The truth’s a light indeed and you belong to it
Bend it, twist it — to keep the truth in quarantine
(Nation)
Do you wonder, ever wonder, how we got ourselves into this mess?
And I wonder, now I wonder, if we agreed that we should be oppressed?
Do the people - we the people, recognize the freedom that we lost?
And I wonder, now I wonder, are we willing to pay the cost?
(Mr. Illegitimate)
You ask me to buy it with no way to pay
The truth is lying deep and we’ll all be the same
Let the truth live
Find your way out of your deam
(Nation)
We the people, were the people fighting for a perfect union
And I wonder, now I wonder, if we lost our determination
Do you hear it? do you hear it?
Do you hear the distant thunder?
And I wonder, now I wonder — could it be the Nation’s Anger?
Do you hear the distant thunder?
And I wonder, now I wonder — do you see the Nation’s Anger?
(Mr. Illegitimate)
The truth from lies — I should know
Cause I know that two and two make four - you tell us five
And (you) swear an oath to prison growth
And (You) say it’s good that we are makin war
(Nation)
Do you wonder, ever wonder how we got ourselves into this mess?
And I wonder, now I wonder if we agreed that we should be oppressed
Do the people - we the people recognize the freedom that we lost
And I wonder, now I wonder, are we willing to pay the cost?
Do the people - we the people recognize the freedom that we lost?
And I wonder, now I wonder
Are we willing to pay the cost?
