In what has become an annual ritual for the Republican held legislature in Virginia’s General assembly a bill has been introduced with the insidious purpose of bringing shame onto women for having the right to make the difficult choice to terminate a pregnancy. This is just the latest in a string of psychological attacks on women in Virginia starting with fetal personhood, fetal death, clinical licensing, and the mother of all indignities, Trans-vaginal ultrasounds back in 2009 with more every year right up to today.
Every one of these bills are not-so-subtle attempts at mind control. The thought process of the GOP is, if we cannot deny the services out right then we have to make the decision to terminate a pregnancy so psychologically difficult that women abandon their choice. What they did not think about is that Virginia’s women are strong enough to endure their incipit assaults on their rights while vigorously working to make them stop.
As we approach the women’s march on Washington DC tomorrow let's be sure to remember how little the GOP thinks of Virginia’s women. Remember how they have tried their level best to force their false moral judgments on them, and when that didn’t work they attempted to shame them into submission. Finally remember how none of their tactics have softened the resolve of these patriots.
I will be with my sisters in Washington DC tomorrow, not as a source of protection, or as some patriarchal chaperone , but as a partner in their fight for equality. Enough is enough.
