Oh look, Sen. Mitch McConnell is having another one of his frequent bouts of The Amnesia. Maybe Donald Trump is only the tip of a mental health iceberg: Are all our Republican leaders suffering from an inability to remember their own statements from one day to the next?
Campaign Action
2016: “The question is, will [Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland] have a hearing, and will it be taken up by the Judiciary Committee. He will not be. [...] This nominee is not going to be considered. [...] The president initiates the appointment, the Senate decides whether or not to consider it at all.”
2017: “Apparently there’s yet a new standard now, which is to not confirm a Supreme Court nominee at all. [...] I think this is something the American people simply will not tolerate [...] Our hope would be that our Democratic friends would treat President Trump’s nominees in the same way we treated Clinton and Obama.”
The best part of this tape may be the zombie-eyed looks on all the other Republican faces as Mitch McConnell bullshits his way through his explanation for why the first black American president was not going to get any vote on any Supreme Court nominee, period, for the last full year of his presidential term but it would be a goddamn Kentucky-fried disgrace if anyone tried to even slow down the nominations then put forth by the white guy. They don’t care. They know it’s bullshit. Check out Mike Pence back there—he seems to even think it’s funny.
What a good little soldier Mitch McConnell is. The whole team, really. The only difference between Mitch McConnell and Sean Spicer is that Sean Spicer can’t quite hold a straight face through his lies, but McConnell will flatly demand Democrats treat Trump like Republicans treated Obama—like he spent his whole life preparing for that very moment.
