Only the conventional wisdom elites in Washington believe we are headed toward becoming some kind of McGovern-like Democratic Party. It's no longer a right-left playground that these fools feel so comfortable pontificating about. McGovern was never regarded by anyone as a stronger candidate against Nixon than Humphrey or any other more moderate figure. But in 2016 Sanders polled stronger than Clinton in all matchups with republicans for five months because he was addressing the economic pain of the working class voters and she wasn't. The issues he struck a chord with were campaign finance reform, wall street corruption, the exploding costs in healthcare, and the inability of parents to afford a college education for their children--all issues where Clinton's long-time alliances with Corporate Democrats rendered her unable to respond in a way that could attract swing voters. To portray these issues as "McGovern-leftist" is pure bullshit, because in the Seventies we had decent campaign finance laws, a much more reasonably-priced healthcare system, affordable college for virtually every American, and a Wall Street that responded to the economics of Main Street instead of shameful worship of the Oligarchs that so dominate today's economy. Sanders campaigned on issues that we once could take for granted. Because he stubbornly refused to de-emphasize his long-time brand as a "socialist" it was easy to paint him as far left and therefore “unelectable”. But in truth he was fighting for things we have lost. He was stronger than Hillary with swing voters because many of them were on the front line of those losses. There is little disagreement among Democrats on the social issues, we're nearly all pro-choice, and we're in lockstep against discrimination of any kind. We’ll have to fight every day to roll back the demonic agenda of the Trump Agenda on a whole range of social and environmental issues. But fighting for what we once had and a little bit more on the economic front as well is not far-left, it's common sense. Failure to stand up to the greedy Corporate Giants who have used government to achieve their selfish agenda is not moderate, it’s incredibly self-destructive to Democrats and disastrous for the country.
