This is a short diary on the special elections held today in Oklahoma.
According to the State Election Board website, Democrat Allison Ikley-Freeman appears to have won the election for the unexpired term of State Senate district 37—my district, in a western suburb of Tulsa. Republicans handily won other contested partisan races.
It seems likely that there will be a recount, as the result was close: 2234 votes for Allison and 2203 for her opponent (50.35% to 49.65%). Never think your vote doesn’t count, even in Oklahoma!
In 2016, Republicans took this seat 57%-40%, with the remainder to an independent candidate. However, in 2016 over 31,000 people voted, while barely 4400 voted in this election. This year, the Democrats had excellent GOTV, with door-knockers, phone calls and text reminders to vote, and a mailing timed to arrive on election day.
