Exciting campaign news: The Bexar County Young Democrats on Sunday announced their endorsement for my campaign in the 2018 Democratic Primary for Texas Congressional District 21. The group voted on Saturday evening and announced their endorsement the following day in a post on their Facebook page.
Bexar County, which includes San Antonio, Texas, is one of the biggest sources of votes in the 21st District of Texas, providing the second-most votes in recent Democratic primaries and the most votes in recent general elections.
It’s clear that Young Democrats and younger people in general in this district need a change in their Washington, D.C. representation. Last week, Republicans put forward a plan to end the tax deduction for student loan interest and to bankrupt graduate students while giving tax breaks for private jets and outsourcing. That’s in addition to the GOP’s embarrassing inability to act on the basic fact of human-driven climate change—a failure that drove me to enter this race in the first place.
The Bexar County Young Democrats endorsement follows our campaign’s decisive win at the Bexar County Democrats 2018 Primary Straw Poll event on Nov. 11. These wins and the momentum they provide in Bexar County show the value of our early, consistent focus on the area in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, who is retiring at the end of 2018.
We’re excited about these milestones, but we also know they mean we are going to draw fire from Republicans very soon. We learned this weekend that Trump's digital director is coming to work for the GOP in this district. We must be ready—and we will be. (You can help us prepare with a contribution to our campaign.)
We entered this race when people said it was impossible for a Democrat to win. But after eight months of organizing around progressive values alongside groups like Our Revolution and Indivisible, we have driven the 16-term incumbent into retirement. Now our race is on the national radar.
The spark provided by those who believed in this campaign early on has turned into a wildfire. If we stand together, there's no stopping us.
