This is short, but couldn’t be more important. Today there are elections all over the country. Sometimes it’s absolutely crucial to the nation (like the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia.) Some might seem less far-reaching—but I guarantee you they are, for several reasons.
First, no excuses. In our precinct all there is on our ballot involves a sheriff’s millage. It will pass. But our precinct changed, and there is always the possibility that some records will be confused. I have very little tolerance for those who show up once every 4 years, and then are surprised that they aren’t clearly registered. It’s election day. We will be there. YOU need to be there too. And in your vehicle or on the handlebars of your bike, take along someone who might be uncertain about registration. (BTW: I will also complain that they have moved our precinct to a fundamentalist church. Undue conflict!)
Second, every political action begins at the very roots of each community. Even if you know that the person across the coffee counter from you won’t agree, start a conversation. Use a local issue if possible; emphasize personal benefit and personal freedom. You might just be surprised at the reaction. Election day is a great time to do that.
Third, think dominos. In 2010 the GOP made two major efforts to control the redistricting effects of the census. The first was to take a cabinet position in Commerce, but when it was clear that Commerce could not change the way the census would be conducted (i.e. who would be counted) it got a lot more complex. Second, the GOP used their LOCAL success to gerrymander like never before. They could make local moves because there had been local apathy. While Holder and Obama have a major effort to correct the crimes (my word) committed here, nothing will happen until 2020 at the earliest. If people had been consumed by the importance of local elections in 2010 the entire history of the nation would be different.
Fourth, it’s time to scare the hell out of the GOP. They know who shows up. Right now, they tolerate Trump because they think it doesn’t matter...that his dismembered signing hand is a benefit to them. If they see even localized tsunamis, it will be far different in 2018.
So set your alarm. After all, it’s only the 3rd day of Standard Time and it will not be so hard to get up early. Go down to your precinct, reaffirm your registration, and cast your vote for that city dog catcher...senior millage...beautification begonia project...or governor.
Then go home, pour your favorite beverage, and call someone else before the polls close.
Finally, come back here and celebrate on an open thread. Those dogs, seniors, begonias...Dreamers, refugees, or the taxpayers down the street will thank you.
