It’s clear that that the power people don’t feel that they need to listen to public pressure. I've felt since Day One that we would probably come down to the need for a general strike, and I think this is the first time I’ve seen people throw that out there in the comments. Really tough proposition, though- so many are still oblivious, and so many, also, on the edge financially. At the same time, there are many businesses that depend on the public’s use of their services, and who have no more interest than the rest of us in nuclear war or in a recession or depression- both possible outcomes of current directions in “leadership”.
So I was wondering if we could use the upcoming Women’s March to set off a schedule of rotating Days Without.
- Day One: as big a strike as we can muster (Day Without Work- which could also be a day of Prayer Vigil for those in a faith community)
- Day Two: Day Without Google
- Day Three: Without Amazon
- Day Four: Facebook
- Day Five: grocery stores
- etc
One day’s activity is so big, for each of these groups, that it would make a real impact. We would be asking them to join together to pressure the Republican majority for basic guarantees. My personal list would be:
- restrictions on the President’s access to nuclear weapons
- start over with a bipartisan tax bill
- require the administration to staff the State Department and other human services
- rescind all judicial nominations including SCOTUS
- require decent, nonpartisan aid to Puerto Rico
Anyone want to brainstorm? Besides the Women’s March, we can contact our local Precinct Delegate or just simply get out in our neighborhoods, inform people, create a mailing list and see how many people we can get on board.
