Just watched the Daily Kos ‘Protect Meuller’ live event.
I really don’t like to be a critic, but there was alot to criticize about the prezentation. Don’t be mad at me, DK, because without feedback, it’s hard to improve. I’ll just do a simple numbered account of all the problems.
1. The first and biggest goof was linking to the ‘event’.
There was no unambiguous ‘click here’ or button to get someone directly to it. I clicked the 1st thing that looked like it should do that and it went to the facebook page of the people running the show. Then it was not the top thing there, and maybe not even shown anywhere on that page! The ‘watch video‘ button was for something interesting, but completely different. So I’m sitting here wondering if your show was still an hour away (different time zone ambiguity, so here’s sub problem 1.1: how hard would it have been for you to do the standard 8pm eastern, 7pm central, etc. to save people the trouble of having to guess when it starts?)
After about 10 minutes of fumbling around, (6:55 to 7:05) I just happened to stumble into the show.
Maybe this was intentional to keep from overloading the servers? I don’t know. Sounds like a reasonable excuse, but it seems to me that doing something that will piss off a bunch of people who were interested is an outstandingly bad idea.
2. I know that Youtube has a live stream feature. You should have done the show there. When major network organizations such as ABC and NBC can’t do internet video presentation, you know it’s not easy. Youtube and a few others that specialize in it should be the first thing you consider when picking a venue. Instead you picked facebook, the hands-down winner of the Scatterbrain of the Year award 10 years in a row! (hypothetically anyway. I don’t think such an award exists kuz I just made it up, but if it did...)
As an example — during the show I received a ‘facebook phone call’! Never heard of that! Must be someone from this show, perhaps seeking an audio question or comment. Nope. Just somebody in my facebook friends list who I don’t really know. So, a big white window blocking your show and distracting me for 2 minutes while trying to answer, then allow, then answer the call. And, true to facebook form, the call failed anyway.
3. The show was an utter mess.
Maybe it’s a budget thing, but how much could it have cost to hire someone with real TV directorial experience? Like a retired local news director or something? Seriously — a few hundred dollars and maybe she would have insisted on hiring a few more professionals, so 500$, 1000$. Well worth it to not make a grade school amateur hour embarrassment.
4. The comments stream was a worthless waste of screen real estate. Unless you’re an honors graduate of the Evelyn Woods speed reading academy, it was zipping along way too fast to read more than a few words in any post.
Finally, 5. No definite run time or end.
Mark Ruffalo ended his part properly, but I am not sure if it was the end of the show. For all I know, it’s still running.
BUT! I still enjoyed the show. I am hoping you will edit it and post it on Youtube. I missed a part of Norm Eisen’s 2nd segment because of the facebook call, and want to know what he said.
Good luck for next time.
