At the top of the Rec List is a diary called Now I sort of understand how we lost...
The diarist speaks of a lot of new blood attending a meeting, getting bored, and speaks of officials even yelling at them for being too rowdy.
I empathize with the frustration--I too, am a Democrat in Florida. Our local and state parties are, by and large, a joke. It's disheartening. We have more registered Dems than republicans, yet we are completely shut out of power. Democratic officials aren't going to suddenly change--so we need to be the instrument of change.
Here's what I want the diarist to know: you don't have to put up with it. My neighbor was a rabid teabagger, and he complained about his meetings--run by establishment lackeys--several years ago. Back then, it was a ton of rednecks who showed up and demanded something be done about this Kenyan usurper trying to give them healthcare. They didn't cry and go home--they took over. He held meetings in his house--established a tea party chapter. Then he dragged them en masse to the GOP meeting and had everyone vote for each other to be precinct chair in their respective precincts. Now many of them have moved up the ranks. Within a year, the rednecks were running the show. He's disengaged now--but since the GOP runs everything, I guess he can coast.
First things first. You say the place was crowded? Good!! Find out when the elections are for precinct chair. It just takes a few votes---get a few of your buddies to show up. It's not hard. Now you are an official. This is where change starts.
Once you win your seat, you become a member of your County Democratic Party Executive Committee.
Here’s a step by step process on how to win your precinct seat. Don’t wait for the Democrats to change—we ARE the change.
