Today in “government so small it could fit in your uterus” we have a Texas state Senate committee unanimously passing a bill that’d make it legal for a doctor to lie to a pregnant patient — especially if the doctor suspects the patient might get an abortion. From the San Antonio Current:
Committee members, it appears, believe it should be up to the doctor to decide if a pregnant woman should know she's carrying a fetus with severe disabilities — especially if the doctor suspects she'll have an abortion if she finds out. If passed, the law would make it impossible for Texans to sue a doctor for intentionally withholding this kind of information about a fetus' health.
"It shouldn't be the policy for the state of Texas to excuse doctors from lying to their patients," said Blake Rocap, policy advisor for NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, in his testimony before the committee. "That's what this bill does."
Texas lawmakers are so set on making the mere act of having a uterus hell that they want to endanger one of the most important relationships a pregnant person can have: the one they have with their doctor. People go to doctors because they are experts who are supposed to help you understand your body better. Without that basis of trust between a doctor and pregnant person, there can be dangerous consequences.
And it isn’t just pro-choice advocates who oppose this extreme and dangerous bill. One women shared her own experience that could become much more common if it turns into law:
Rachel Tiddle, who unknowingly carried a fetus with severe abnormalities, said if she knew her fetus had severe health issues, she would have tried one of many experimental therapies to try and save her baby's life. Instead, she gave birth to a stillborn baby.
There is nothing “pro-life” about this.
