March 23 (UPI) -- Police in Ukraine suspect a contract killer fatally shot former Russian parliament member Denis Voronenkov on Thursday in Kiev.
Voronenkov, 45, died in an exchange of gunfire outside Kiev's Premier Palace Hotel. Two other people, including his bodyguard, were injured. The unidentified bodyguard fired one shot at assailants.
He was a member of the state Duma and on Russia's federal wanted list, as well as on an international wanted list, charged with masterminding fraud. He testified before the Ukrainian prosecutor general's office in a treason case against pro-Russian former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanokovich, and later emigrated to Kiev. He and his wife, opera singer and fellow legislator Maria Maksakova, settled in Kiev in 2016 after Voronenkov renounced his Russian citizenship; he has been a Ukrainian citizen since.
