Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Street Prophets Coffee Hour, an open thread conveniently located at the intersection of Religion and Politics. To start us off today, I thought we might look back at 1955, a time when Jim Crow reigned supreme and both racism and sexism were out in the open.
By 1955, seven out of ten families owned an automobile and the average cost of a new car was $1,900. Gasoline cost about 25 cents a gallon.
Coca Cola, which had previously only been sold in bottles, was now sold in cans.
In 1955, the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group arrived in South Vietnam to help train the South Vietnamese military. This marked the beginning of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
