This is no April Fool’s joke. The Commonwealth of Virginia is giving away five million dollars every day to cover healthcare expenses for working families. There’s just one catch: Virginia residents need not apply.
Virginia’s taxpayers are generously funding coverage for people in states like North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky. If you live in one of these 31 states or Washington, DC, you are eligible to see your doctor and fill prescriptions courtesy of the good people of Virginia.
Republicans in our General Assembly have voted year after year to deny Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act. As a result, we are sending $5,000,000 out of the state daily without getting anything in return. If they accepted the expansion, money would come flowing back in to cover 400,000 working Virginians - people who earn too much money to qualify under current rules, but not enough to afford private health insurance.
The real fools are the Republicans who continue to deny this coverage. First, because it is cruel for a country with so many resources to deny medical care to the people who keep it running. Second, because more people are waking up and it won’t be long before these Republicans start losing their seats. I look forward to making Virginia the first state to see that happen.
I’m running for the House of Delegates because working people need an advocate in Richmond. We need leaders fighting for progressive priorities like affordable healthcare, public education, social equality, and our environment. That’s what I’m committed to, and if you’re with me, I need your help.
