There is a very slight problem with all of the hubris being expressed on here about the MOAB attack on the Daesh stronghold in eastern Afghanistan.
The strike had been in the works for a number of months, dating back to the Obama administration, which is when the bomb itself had been moved into Afghanistan. The authority to use the bomb had been delegated to Nicholson, although he notified Washington in advance, Martin reports.
With Trump’s attention span, willful disregard of detail and the delegated authority already given, it is highly unlikely that Trump actually ordered the operation. Let's look at what Trump said about the attack, something which was ignored in all the fuss about his ignorant use of “my”.
Everybody knows exactly what happened and what I do is I authorize my military. We have the greatest military in the world and they've done their job as usual. So, we have given them total authorization
Even more indicative that Trump was merely taking the credit for an operation already planned under Obama and had not specifically authorized the use of the MOAB is a later point in the CNBC report:
Trump did not provide further details on the operation.
He didn't provide “further details" because he did not know them. His only information had likely come from his TV viewing after the event. Trump is not acting as Commander in Chief unless he has his toy soldiers lined up outside the Palm Beach Kremlin as a show to greet foreign leaders like Xi. There are no reports of him being in the operations room while this highly significant attack was going on — something you would have expected of Obama. Instead, unless forced to authorize nuclear attacks, he intends to and has simply told his military commanders to get on with what they want to do. That in itself is deplorable. Maybe he’ll blame bone spurs.
