Currently the people of the world are biting their nails down to the quick because the tension between North Korea and the United States have been ratcheted up by two hard headed leaders.
I happened to to watch Bill Maher tonight and he had David Miliband on. He is the President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and former British Labour Party politician.
I heard him say the most unbelievable and sane thing about what could solve the conflict, with both countries getting what they want. North Korea wants a peace treaty and to know that war isn't looming over their heads. The United States wants the missile development, both the conventional and nuclear, to end.
He didn't have a chance to talk about North Korea’s neighbors, who’s needs would need to be figured into a peace agreement. The Chinese and South Koreans don't want refugees from a potential war swarming across their borders, while the South Koreans, the Japanese and Americans don't want to cease to exist. Perhaps, what we did with Japan after World War II, where they have a nominal army, might be a solution, with North Korea being given aid. They'd have to allow all the neighbor's and the US to have inspections to make sure there are no missile developments.
I realize that currently, taking into account who the leaders and personalities of both of these countries are, this happening is just a dream. But without an idea and some hope, where would we be as human beings?
