I tuned on MSNBC just in time to hear Gen. Barry McCaffrey, the retired four star general who is a frequent contributor on the cable station, say that the reason he thought Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn was forced out from his previous job with the Obama administration because he had mental problems.
I am not sure it is new news coming from someone with the credentials of General McCaffrey. If it is I’d say it’s significant.
It is certainly damning when it comes to the criticism that the Trump team apparently didn’t vet Flynn. My hunch is that he was Trump’s pet general who stood by him through the primary and campaign, and his selection as the president’s National Security Advisor was a done deal the moment Trump said he wanted him in this job vital to the national security.
The National Security advisor is part of the National Security Council and usually chairs the Principals Committee meetings with the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense.
I figured there was something psychologically amiss by observing Gen. Flynn, especially his leading the cheering “lock her up” at that Trump rally. This was hardly what you’d expect from a three star general.
I thought the phrase “leadership style” was probably a euphemism for a a personality problem, if not mental illness:
Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, is being pushed out after a series of clashes over his leadership style, report Greg Miller and Adam Goldman at The Washington Post citing current and former U.S. officials.

Likewise with the phrase “his management style was chaotic.”
Flynn's critics also maintained that his management style was chaotic and that his aggressive push for changes often did not include an adequate follow-through.

This is what Gen. McCaffrey said in December:
A top general who once supported the choice of retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn as President-elect Trump's national security adviser is now saying his appointment should be re-examined because of his "demented" tweets.
Retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who served for 30 years in the Army and was in charge of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President Clinton, said Thursday he's changed his mind on Flynn.
"I said he was, correctly, probably the best intelligence officer of his generation," McCaffrey told MSNBC. "But, I must admit, I'm now extremely uneasy about some of these tweets which don't sound as if they are political skullduggery but instead border on being demented.” Washington Examiner
And, then there are his Tweets!
I have written — endlessly it seems (see link on bottom of page) — for an entire year now about all the evidence that Trump is mentally ill with personality disorders that go back many years.
By reviewing Gen. Flynn’s career from the time he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in 1981 and moved successfully up the ranks by dint of accomplishment, it would suggest whatever now ails him is of faily recent onset.
I am not ready to blame him entirely for whatever he did with Russia because I am not sure he was in his right mind. Don’t get me wrong, every time I see the video of him cheering “lock he”r up I cringe and wonder what those in the military thought of this.
………………
Is it any wonder that a mentally ill president wouldn’t care about, or even recognize, the derangement in one of his toadies?
