As the noose of the Russia investigation continues to tighten around the Trump administration, it’s interesting to note just how few people on 45’s shortlist even want the job to begin with. For the last few days, the smart money seemed to be on Lieberman getting the nod. After all, with no experience in that type of role whatsoever, and obvious conflicts of interest, he seemed a natural fit for one of the least ethical admistrations in modern times. But even the craven opportunist that Joe Lieberman is, couldn’t find himself craven enough to ignore the obvious ethical lapses he would need to endure to take the job. Today, he withdrew.
Politico:
In a letter sent Wednesday to President Donald Trump, Lieberman said he wanted to avoid any potential conflict due to Trump’s decision to tap attorney Marc Kasowitz as his primary outside counsel in ongoing investigations into possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia. Kasowitz and Lieberman work for the same New York firm.
Maybe the real reasons had more to do with his own internal whip count. Maybe he thinks that jumping on now will ultimately tarnish what little legacy he hadn’t already ruined between his primary loss and 2008 McCain/Palin endorsement. But ultimately, those reasons don’t matter too much. The bottom line, we won’t have Joe Lieberman to kick around anymore, and thank heavens for that.
